Cameo Homes of Killeen and Harker Heights and Lackmeyer Homes of Killeen topped the awards with four apiece in the annual Parade of Homes judging, announced Friday during the general membership banquet for the Central Texas Home Builders Association.

Cameo took top honors for Best Kitchen and Best Exterior Design in the less than $200,000 home category and Best Kitchen and Best Craftsmanship in the more than $300,000 category in the annual judging. ackmeyer swept all but one of the five divisions in the $201,000 to $300,000 category, coming away with awards for Best Kitchen, Best Interior Design, Best Craftsmanship and Best Exterior Design.

The banquet, at the CTHBA offices in Harker Heights, kicked off the 45th year for the Parade of Homes. A total of 21 homes around the region were entered in the contest. All but one were judged for the competition, chairperson Fran Mitchell said.

“We had to pull one out,” she told the membership. “It sold before it could be judged.”

It’s been a tough haul recently in the new home market, said Dave Kuebler, vice president and branch manager for SWBC Mortgage in Killeen, the premier sponsor of this year’s Parade of Homes. But that made this year’s entries even more impressive, he said.

“(Builders) have done a good job keeping products up,” Kuebler said. “It’s been a trying three years and this year has been no exception.”

Homes in the competition were broken down into three categories, by price, for the judging, Mitchell said. Those categories were further split into five judging areas: Best Kitchen, Best Bath, Best Interior Design, Best Craftsmanship and Best Exterior Design.

“I went to several of the homes,” Mitchell said. “The craftsmanship — you really need to go look at them.

“I was just in awe,” Mitchell said. “Hats off to the builders. You did a great job.”

CTHBA board member Chris Butler organized this year’s Parade of Homes, beginning the work almost as soon as the 2009 event ended. He said Friday he, too, was impressed with the entries this year.

“There are some wonderful homes in the parade this year,” Butler said. “I know all the judges enjoyed going around. I think this just keeps getting better and better.”
